There is a required international field study component to my masters degree which means, drum roll please… bbbbada bbbbbada bbbbada (that’s what my drum roll sounds like)… I am going! To Europe that is. I will be spending 3 weeks traipsing around 6 Eastern European countries this May. Soon enough I will be sharing with you my travels to…

Munich, Germany

Vienna, Austria

Bratislava, Slovakia

Belgrade, Serbia

Istanbul, Turkey

Rome, Italy

I’m so excited I can hardly breathe!

This Week I Love…

February 24, 2012 § Leave a comment

a good road trip! I am heading back to the North Shore for some skiing. When I say skiing I mean sitting in the chalet drinking and reading my newest book while Michael,  my boyfriend, slides down icy hills with with boards strapped to his feet. Whenever I think of explaining skiing to someone who isn’t familiar, the sport sounds terrifying to me. Hence all the drinking and book reading. Hopefully we will return sans injury and with a few photos to share. How about you? Do you have an adventure planned this weekend? Speaking of which…

Adventure! However you want to define it…

Our favorite chocolate chip cookies.

Wouldn’t you love to drink your morning coffee in this airy French kitchen?

I got a kick out of this.

An unbelievable transformation of a run-down trolley depot.

A super simple appetizer, dessert or snack.

8 shipping containers = 1 home.

Make your own ricotta cheese.

Have you been keeping up on this season of Downton Abbey? It’s getting so good. Play along with these paper dolls and find interesting cast facts here.

This caramelized onion, mushroom, and brie sandwich makes my stomach growl.

I have mixed feelings about the plot… and certain aspects of the trailer but I still want to see this movie.

Hunger Games nail polish! Don’t mind if I do.

A Brief But Embarrassing Encounter

February 23, 2012 § Leave a comment

I have a brief but embarrassing story to share with you. Not that long ago I went to a bakery in my neighborhood, it is a small, charming place with little tables and large price tags. And for the record, I do not frequent this establishment. I try to avoid the calories and crowds that come with it, but on a whim I found myself indulging in a Banana Nutella Brioche for breakfast that day. I had just settled into a comfortable, overstuffed leather armchair and was soaking up the heat from the fire place and the sugary goodness of my breakfast treat when the person sitting across from me leans over with a smile on her face and says, “You look like your having a relationship with you food!”

How rude!  How true!  How embarrassing!

To be fair, I was looking at the pastry in the same way I would someone I love (or lust). And given a few more moments with it I would have professed some strong feelings to confirm that. But what does a statement like that say about a person? Especially when it comes from a stranger? My mind still boggles over all the ways one could interrupt such an intimate and telling affirmation.

I replied to my one member audience with ” That’s because I am!” I believe my response came off as comical rather than alarming or disgusting. The stranger then went on to explain that she was the baker (she made my treat!) and that seeing people like myself enjoying what she creates brings her great happiness.

Okay sure, I will give her that. I would also enjoy seeing my work appreciated but seriously? A relationship with my food? I don’t know if I can live this one down.

I had an enjoyable time seeing this band in concert last night. “My Body” seemed to be everyone’s favorite song.

“Islands” was my favorite.

Look Into A Restraining Order

Lets talk about chocolate for a sec. It might be a little late for this Valentine’s Day but good chocolate is a great gift for any occasion and this round-up of specialty chocolate [via Bon Appetit} really makes my mouth water.

I guess you could say I am in a relationship with chocolate. It started at a very young age and has matured and evolved over the years. I started as a milk chocolate girl. The format was always simple, and often cheap. I was easy to please. Most kids are. It wasn’t until I got to college that I decided to give the dark stuff a try. It was more an act of moderation than anything else. My logic was this- I like dark chocolate less, so if I only buy dark chocolate I will eat less of it. Right? Well no. Not quite. In fact I fell in love and proved my theory illogical. What was once a childish fling became a full blown love affair shortly there after. And now today, this love has become almost unhealthy. It hinges on obsession at times. If chocolate were a person, he or she would be smart to look into a restraining order. Soon.

And today, much like any popular consumer good, it has become sophisticated. Complex. You pair it with beverages, you add salts, gold flakes, tea leaves,  and other expensive accents to highlight it’s qualities. You vary the quantities of cocoa and milk fats to tantalize the taste buds and challenge your idea of what chocolate should taste like. I am no connoisseur, simply a devout fan, but my love runs deep and the amount of time I have spent thinking about these Bon Appetit suggested American made chocolates is disconcerning.

Where are you on the chocolate spectrum? Simple and satisfied? Complex and consumed?

Happy Valentine’s Day

I heard this movie is painfully heart breaking and intense, but I can’t help myself from thinking I should watch it this Valentine’s day. What about you? Do you have any celebratory plans this evening?
