Do you ever go to movies alone?
I once viewed the idea as sad and lonely, but not any more. A few years ago I found myself seeking an American experience while I was studying abroad and a cool, empty theater showing an overrated American blockbuster on a Wednesday afternoon was the answer. Forget sad and lonely, it was actually very nice. The truth is, unless you talk through movies (and I don’t) seeing a motion picture is very much a solitary event. It’s nice to have a companion to discuss the film with afterwards but not a deal breaker for me. Plus I appreciate a little alone time when life gets hectic.
If you’ve never seen a movie by yourself, I suggest you give it a try. Select a movie your too cool to admit to anyone you’d like to see, or one that your partner or friends don’t have an interest in. It makes the experience more self indulgent and fun. When I go I like to get a big bucket of popcorn and eat it as a meal rather than a snack. I like to sit in the middle of the row, near the front, and I like to put my feet up on chair in front of me.
Plus, it’s been really warm lately. If the July heat is getting to you, go to the theater, take in a show, and enjoy the air conditioning. Oh, and then let me know what you think!

Alice in Wonderland, Coming Soon
February 23, 2010 § Leave a Comment
I have no one to blame but myself. I said I wouldn’t get my hopes up, I said I wouldn’t get excited, but I can’t help myself. I can’t wait to see Alice in Wonderland! He’s so good at what he does, I have to put full faith in Tim Burton’s vision.
There are also speculations on recreating a classic, and always divided opinions on the screen play, cinematography, and vision for something so familiar and specific… so there is a chance this could be a big fat flop! But, I am more optimistic then that. I haven’t read the book or seen the Disney movie in many years so my comparisons will be minimal at best and I’ve already told you how much I love Helen Bonham Carter!
Opens March 5th.
A Bookcase Into Your Soul?

A Cup of Jo had a post on bookcase inspiration and had said
You can learn so much about someone from their books, don’t you think? My sister’s husband says he first realized that he loved her when he looked through her bookcase.
I really like this. I have always thought the same thing about a person’s bedroom or just home rather. Whether they are organized, or clean. If they’re religious. What types of music, movies, and books they consume. If they cook. What they like to eat. It’s all there- a visual depiction of ourselves.
And they’re beautiful! More inspiring bookcases…
Summer Camp

My local newspaper has an advertisement encouraging organizations to submit their summer camp information for 2010. This simple ad has made for a very nostalgic day.
Growing up I found myself at Girl Scout camp, bible camp, tennis camp, dance camp, and probably more but for whatever reason all of my fondest summer camp memories come from movies.
Those coming of age, co-ed, summer camp comedies really seem to have made an impression on me… Heavyweights, Camp Nowhere, The Parent Trap (1961), Kamp Krusty (The Simpsons), Camp Chippewa (Addams Family Values), and It Takes Two among others.
Perhaps it’s a sign my parents should have reduced my television consumption and sent me to more summer camps!?
Side note: I have never actually been camping! I’ve never collected fire wood, put up a tent, found myself without electricity, or had to pee outdoors. I hope this isn’t an indication that the Girl Scouts have failed me.
Do you have any camp memories worth sharing?
March of the Penguins

I finally watched March of the Penguins. I had been putting it off because I heard it was sad, which it was- but such is life.
Anyway, and I know this is saying a lot but, I was shocked at how much information I already knew about penguins. This isn’t a horn tooting situation, I think it almost boarders on something embarrassing! And I wouldn’t say I like penguins any more or less then any other animal.
The story wasn’t particularly upsetting or sad to me and I think it’s because I already knew this was happening. I actually found myself waiting for Morgan Freeman to talking about specific penguin facts that I felt should be mentioned in the movie.
Now I am just making myself blush.
Oh well, the secret’s out- I am a walking penguin encyclopedia.

What are your plans for New Years Eve?
I am spending the day at my sister’s place scraping wallpaper and chipping paint for her mini-kitchen-renovation. Her and her husband just purchased a beautiful Grey Gardens-esque home from the 1890′s- it needs a lot if love!
Anyway, she and I and the rest of our siblings will be closing in the new year with some Chinese take-out, a couple bottles of champagne, and The Odd Couple.
Happy New Year!
I like this version of Auld Lang Syne- it’s kind of jazzy!
